White Crowned Sparrow

I was hiking in the desert early one morning in the spring and heard one of the sweetest, most beautiful birdsongs I've ever encountered. It was the kind of song that makes you stop in your tracks and look around for the angel who is visiting Earth for the day.  This little guy (apparently it's only the males that sing) is visually nondescript compared with much flashier birds. (Don't discount the crown, though. It reminds me of an elegant helmet.) However, it's a thrill to watch these sparrows thrust out their chests and sing their hearts out. My bird sources say the song of the White Crowned Sparrow is one of the most studied songs of the entire animal kingdom, but how can you truly study enchantment? No words for that.
