Cactus Wren

Nothing says "hello, Southwestern desert" than the song of the Cactus Wren. Cactus Wrens are curious and lively little birds with very distinctive calls. Sometimes they're described as the sound an old car trying to start up, but I think it sounds more like an angry giant cicada sending out morse code.

The Cactus Wren is the state bird of Arizona and as the name suggests, it likes to build nests in cactus. I used to have many more Cactus Wrens hanging around my house when I first moved down here and I miss seeing them. I was lucky to see this one recently. It had been eating honeybees.

This is a graphite and gouache 7" x 9" drawing on hand toned paper. The drawing is matted with an archival quality soft white 100% cotton rag board; the outside of the mat is 8" x 10". The drawing is otherwise unframed.
